FAQ

What is screed made of?

For a fine screed top layer, the screed will be made from sharp sand and cement. We use fibres to help reduce surface cracking and a Retarding additive to give you longer to lay your screed.

How long before i can walk on it?

You can walk on any sand and cement screed 48 hours after it has been laid. With liquid screed you can walk on it 24-48 hours.

What is the minimum screed thickness and how thick does floor screed have to be?

The minimum thickness / depth of your concrete floor screed will depend on the project at hand with some of the more heavy-duty projects need a much thicker depth of screed to ensure its strength. We always recommend consulting your builder prior to ordering. As a rule, the follow screed depth measurements apply:

  • Bonded Screed: A minimum of roughly 30mm thickness is advised
  • Unbonded Screed: A minimum of roughly 50mm thickness is advised
  • Floating Screed: A minimum of roughly 65mm is advised
  • Underfloor Heating Screed: A minimum of roughly 65mm is advised.

Is screed self-leveling? / How is screed levelled?

Traditional screed is not self-levelling and will require you to manually level it using a laser level. Liquid Screed is however self-leveling.

What is the minimum thickness for liquid screed?

The minimum thickness for liquid screed is 35 mm without underfloor heating and 45 mm with underfloor heating.

How long does it take for Liquid screed to dry?

Liquid screed can be walked on after 24–48 hours, but it can take up to 60 days to fully dry, depending on the thickness and whether it’s over underfloor heating.

What are the two main types of liquid screed?

The two main types are cement-based screed and anhydrite screed, which is a calcium sulfate mixture.

What are the advantages of mixing screed on site with a volumetric mixer?

The difference between having ready mixed screed or having your screed mixed by a Volumetric concrete mixer are very minor with the main advantage being that using a Volumetric concrete mixer ensures that your concrete is always fresh and that you never have excess screed, giving you greater flexibility on the job. Especially so if you find the need for a different strength screed on the fly.

Do you need 2 layers of sheeting? (1 under the celotex and 1 over)

As per building regulations you do require a layer of damp proof underneath insulation and another plastic sheet over the top.

Do I need to do anything to help the drying process?

No, the screed will take the same amount of time to dry regardless of leaving windows/doors open. Stay away from things like building dryers and dehumidifiers may damage the floor by causing it to dry to quickly causing cracks.

What is Concrete?

Concrete is a mixture of aggregates, water, admixtures and cement. Concrete may also contain other additives such as mineral colours, blended cements and blast-furnace slag. Typically its used in construction – including foundations, basements, driveways and various other construction projects.

How do concrete pumps work?

The primary function of a concrete pump is to transport wet mixed concrete from a mixing truck to a designated location on a construction site. The mixed concrete is moved into a hopper, and from there it is moved into the pump’s cylinders. Between moving the concrete from the hopper to the pumps, it is kept moving to preserve the viscosity of the mix.
